A Canada study permit allows international students to study at Canadian Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs). After graduation, you can apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) for up to 3 years, leading to permanent residence pathways.
Key Advantage: Canada offers the clearest pathway from student → work permit (PGWP) → permanent residence. This makes it the #1 choice for Pakistani students seeking immigration.
Work in Canada for up to 3 years after graduation. No job offer needed.
Transition to permanent residence via Express Entry, PNP, or CEC programs.
Apply to a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). Once accepted, you'll receive an official Letter of Acceptance (LOA). The DLI number must appear on the letter.
What is a DLI: Schools approved by provincial governments to host international students. All public universities and most public colleges are DLIs. Check the DLI list at canada.ca.
Show you can pay for: first year tuition + CAD $20,635/year living costs (or $10,000 if in Quebec).
Accepted proof:
Complete medical exam with a panel physician (available in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi). Get Pakistan Police Certificate from your local police station.
Create account on IRCC portal (GC Key), complete application form (IMM 1294), upload documents, pay fees (CAD $150 study permit + $85 biometrics).
Important: Also apply for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) at the same time if you need one to enter Canada.
After submitting your application, you'll receive a Biometric Instruction Letter (BIL). Visit VFS Global in Islamabad, Lahore, or Karachi within 30 days.
Processing time: 4–8 weeks for most Pakistani applicants. Track status online via your GC Key account. IRCC may request additional documents.
If approved, you'll receive a Port of Entry (POE) Letter of Introduction + TRV stamped in your passport. Present the POE letter at a Canadian airport to receive your actual study permit.
The PGWP is Canada's game-changer for international students. It allows you to work anywhere in Canada for any employer after graduation, leading to permanent residence.
Critical: Not all programs are PGWP-eligible. Ensure your program qualifies before applying. Public colleges, universities, and some select private colleges offer PGWP.
Canada actively encourages international students to become permanent residents. Here are the main pathways:
Requirement: 1 year Canadian work experience (via PGWP) + language test (IELTS/CELPIP).
Timeline: Can apply after 1 year of working on PGWP. Processing: 6–8 months.
Provinces like Ontario, BC, and Alberta nominate students who studied in their province.
Timeline: Can apply after graduation or with a job offer. Processing: 6–12 months.
Points-based system. Canadian education + work experience gives bonus points.
Timeline: Anytime after getting work experience. Processing: 6–8 months.
Success Rate: About 60% of international students who get PGWP eventually become Canadian permanent residents.

1. Weak Study Plan / SOP
Unclear why you chose Canada/program, vague career goals, or course doesn't match previous education.
Solution: Write a detailed, logical SOP explaining program choice, how it builds on previous education, and a clear post-study career plan.
2. Insufficient Ties to Pakistan
Visa officer not convinced you'll return to Pakistan after studies.
Solution: Show strong ties: family business, property ownership, job offer after studies, family responsibilities in Pakistan.
3. Financial Insufficiency
Not showing enough funds or unclear source of funds.
Solution: Show the exact amount required + explain the source (salary, business income, sale of assets). GIC is highly recommended.
4. Previous Visa Refusals
Not addressing previous refusals or hiding them.
Solution: Always declare previous refusals. Address the specific reasons in a new application with improved documentation.
5. Choosing Wrong Program
Downgrading education or choosing an unrelated program to previous studies.
Solution: Choose programs that logically build on previous education. If changing fields, explain thoroughly in SOP.
Choose PGWP-Eligible Programs
Verify program qualifies for PGWP. Public colleges and universities are the safest bet.
